Demian Cabaud "Árbol adentro"

Spotlight on Portugal

”Cabaud is not afraid to embark on new unexplored paths full of freedom, with a contemporary and abstract language.”

– La Habitación del Jazz, 2024

”Cabaud is not afraid to embark on new unexplored paths full of freedom, with a contemporary and abstract language.”

Double bass player Demian Cabaud (born in 1977), is originally from Argentina and has studied in the United States. He has been living in Portugal for 20 years, most of it in the north of the country in Porto, a city about the size of Tampere. He is a hardworking and well-employed band musician who has played on about 100 albums – and on top of that he has made his own music, which can be heard on Thursday’s free theme evening from his latest 10th album.

The jazz quintet of two saxophonists led by Cabaud is exactly the same as on his previous album Otro cielo (2021), but now the music is even more personal. When composing the album Árbol adentro (2024), Cabaud was inspired by the poetry collection of the Mexican Nobel Prize winner Octavio Paz. Cabaud received the collection from a friend in Argentina as a farewell present.

The name refers to a tree that grows inward – a bit like his new home country Portugal has gradually grown inside him and blossomed. “Longing will never go away, nor will the accent of speech. But I feel fully integrated by now, I even have dreams in Portuguese.”
